Imagination is the key to creative writing. 

Taking the time to practice stretching your imagination can do wonders for your writing. Reading is one of the best ways to grow your imagination. But so is writing. One thing that you can do is try a writing prompt. 



What is a writing prompt? 

Writing prompts can be anything that a writer uses as a starting point for writing practice. It could be a picture, a song, or an event. Sometimes that starting point could lead to a short story and even sometimes an entire novel.

Writing prompts are a great way for writers to train their imagination. Everyone should train to improve no matter if they are an athlete or an engineer. Writers are no exception. Writers need to exercise and train, too. Might as well have fun by stretching your imagination with a ‘What If …’ writing prompt.

Try setting a 30-minute timer each day for a writing prompt. Below you will find 20 ‘What If …’ prompts to get you started. Let the prompt inspire you. And don’t hold back. Indulge your imagination and you will grow more confident about your writing.
